So, back in Holland and Seton back in LA (in the sun…grr) but will be back here in few weeks.

The reality is just coming down on me now, all the things we have been doing over the last two years seem like a dream, a very strange dream, from London the hippedy hip place to be to the cloudy, curios, roughness of Guangzhou to the floating, sunny, dream world LA . Working with huge T-shirts, fruit chairs, shoes, casinos, bands and move directors…

And now we are back again to were we started this journey, the county that we ran away from so quickly without a thought and without the idea that we would be back one day. The country of small beers, crazy bike riders, tall, curly people, bad haircuts and “hurting my throat” language.
But, but, there is a positive side to being here, it is good to be back to good design, good european food, the people that understand the design language I have come to learn.
And Amsterdam is a interesting city, full of crazy drunk English men in one corner, nerdy tourists in another bigger corner in yellow and red rain jackets, boats and bikes all over traveling very fast, hippies, and us in search for a new cozy corner and to dry up with a good coffee or a mint tea.

Still I’m not understanding how it all happend. Only leafing Iceland for school in Eindhoven…. it sounded so innocent, inn and out, that is it..
But now the new adventure starts, here in a big studio in the center of amsterdam and in a new design job. Very good..

iceland trip. yey.

I’m in Iceland now. It rains some days and some days it is more windy and some days it is less windy and some days the earth shakes.
And we just killed the first and very probably the last polar bear that has ever set foot on this country, I guess he regrets his months of floating on ice to get here. God bless him and the trees that try so desperately to stay in the ground.

I’ve had lots of chocolate/cinnamon buns and I wish the whistling in the house would stop.
Looking forward to go to Holland on monday and see my Seton again and all the good old school buddy’s that are there.

next adventure please..

So, a lot has happened in the last month. We moved into a new place in Korea Town, the place is nice and the area feels safe, though I could not fall asleep yesterday because of all the helicopters flying around just over our house again and again for a really long time. In our last place we would notice them but in this area they are flying right on top of us, I guess they were missing somebody and of course crime always have to happen in the night time (exept in hafnarfjordur..).
But yes, beside the helicopters all is good and I got a extra job witch was really great. The job was to make artwork for bands that were playing in this art and music festival Coachella, so my deal was to make work for 7 bands (including The Breeders, Dan Le Sac Vs Scrobbius Pip, Portishead, Mum, Boys Noize, Architecture in Helsinki) and help for one day to put up stuff in the VIP area, and for that I got free tickets and camping for me and Seton at the festival. So on the tuesday I got a ride with a friend that was also working there and we headed right into the desert.. We arrive in this amazing place, we went to a golf resort hotel (4 swimmingpools….) (witch we were staying in whilst working at preparations for the festival) and from there a 20 minute drive to the festival area (witch is actually a polo ground, but they got rid of the horses) and the area is amazing, palm trees, roses everywhere and lion statues.. haha.. So there I was for 4 days, helped with the decorations for the caravans and the Vip tent and had a great time and go to know some really nice people. And then on the friday Seton and all the rest of Coachella visitors arrived and planted themselfs on the camping site. What a thing to see in a festival, the showers, the clean area and people, the non existing noise after midnight and the non existence of mud or rain..!! Not only that, but we got VIP tickets ( and that means the good area with the nice toilettes and all the famous and cool people and it means you can actually be on stage with the bands!!!?? ) So we did a bit of that, great to be in the sun on top of a stage with all the sweaty people dancing far far away..haha.. what a place to be.. I liked to pretend I was actually the rock star and the were all there to see my rock the stage down (I dont think I was the only one with these thoughts..)..haha… so strange.. but, anyhow, we saw some really good shows, and what stands up must be the saturday line up, Kraftwerk, Portishead and then Prince!!! Amazing… But we had to leave on the sunday because our ride got pissed off so we had to leave early, but that was ok, it made my skin very happy to be out of the sun and the heat..
So now I am back to continue with my two animations, and Seton just finished his work this week, so now we are both back in our flat looking for the next adventure or for it to find us (witch it does seem to do most of the time)… fingers crossed..

LA baby yeahh, tight man

So, here we are, in Los Angeles.. After a long flight (full of americans with their brand spanking new chinese baby´s on their way home) we landed safe and sound, stayed in a hostel for the first nights and found a flat quite easily and moved in..
And so here we are all settled yet again in a new place, again a trip to IKEA was made and barabimm barabumm we have a flat with everything.. It is the nicest flat, windows everywhere and a very big fridge witch got full straight away, and a big living room witch I have taken over with the kitchen table in the middle and my computer and drawing pad and ready for action. Witch I have already actually, I got a small animation job about plastic surgery´s (of course)..
I am very happy to be here, the first thing I did when I got out of the airport was to breath with my nose a big deep breath, and the air, mmm, my god, it smells so good and clean… And the blue sky, so blue and goes on forever… I have missed it a lot… There are so many small things that are so different, like now I have to fight for the seat in the sun!! Normally I would be the only idiot standing not under the tree in the shadow.. And nobody tries to run you over with the car anymore, haha, now I feel safe on the street, but not really the bus though.. There is something with the bus and the special “bus people”, I dont know were they come from but they are very strange, they look and smell funny and talk very loud and some even smack you on the thigh for no reason at all…!! (hahaha, that happened to Seton..) I guess a city like this attracts “special” people and wanna bees, I wonder witch category we fall under then…!
Well, best get on with my drawings, all the best from the land of a lot of food at once and eat it quick..

One more day in Guangzhou..

It always makes things become so real when you start to say your goodbyes to people and places and all of a sudden you start to notice things you did not notice before, it is like it opens all doors for your senses and feelings. Very strange feeling that I think I will never get used to. Leaving China makes my both happy and sad, happy in a way of going back to things I know better and sad in a way of things I have gotten to know (and will miss) and things I did not have time to get to know (both because of time and of being to scared). Tonight I found a really amazing new restaurant right next door (typically enough) and gave away all our new stuff we have been filling our very small flat with, so now I am ready for the next adventure, next pots and pans and pillows and pillowcases…!! again to buy pillowcases..! Such a annoying silly thing to buy! I should have collected pictures of all my pillowcases trough out my travels.. haha, I’ll do that from now on, to see if I remember dreams from my pink flowers/horses pillowcase from the year 1998 (Bournemouth, UK) or the blue and white one with the clouds ( 1999, Copenhagen, Denmark). Yes, good, now I continue my packing and listen to some mexican music (need to get into the whole mexican thing since LA is apparently full of them). gratsias amigo, wholla..

I’ll get my coat..

So, a belated post;

As you are most likely aware, our time in China is down to its last week. this time next week were over the pacific LA headed. Will be interesting no doubt. I am currently fabricating a kind of reportage of the journey thus far, a kind of presentation of my time here, obviously its a concentrated version, 8 months in China is almost a lifetime of mini experiences which i think when out of context are a) hard to explain, and b) hard to comprehend, its like those jokes that the person telling them gets really into it and ends with an un-interested audience and the sentence “well you just had to be there” but its coming on really nicely, it will be like a webzine, i will try put it online, otherwise i can send it out to people if anyone is interested.

So whats been happening?
well, not to much, have been looking around Guangzhou, it has been kind of the first opportunity for me since we’ve been here, we visited parks and the old German colony, we have frequented restaurants and bars, and went to markets and shops. Other than all that we froze our tits off in this ‘not meant for cold weather country’ i mean i have never been this cold, and the worst part of it is that temperatures never dropped below 0˚ its just that the appartments here are made (if anything) to release heat, and to stay cool during the hot summer months, rendering them pathetic for any mildly cold weather, the tiles on the floor are cold cold cold, the plaster on the walls almost wet, and the windows, seems there only reliable function is to collect dirt! We bought a heater, although i think a goldfish would produce more heat, and upon realizing that one singular heater would just not suffice, we returned to the shop to get a next one and… sold out. Completely. All over Guangzhou. So we bought an extra duvet, and slept in many many layers. Between you and me, we even reached the point of putting the gas hobs on as an extra heat source, except it didn’t do good things for the extractor fan above.. got a little bit…. well.. soft around the edges lets say.

In the end of it all i will miss this crazy little hive of random, unexpected, chopstick orientated, chaotic civilians, but i guess its enough for now, it’s been a hell of an experience and i have enjoyed it immensely, learned a lot, and have succeeded in using this adventure to open new doors, which essentially was the goal of the move. I still would love to visit surrounding places such as Beijing, Gweilin, Thailand, Hainan, Japan, Malaysia etc, but i guess i should get a haircut and a real job, save some money and come back for a real ‘visit’. Perhaps this move will be the beginning of all that..

Here’s to the next step.

shower problem

so, Los Angeles baby, the 28th of february, and I can’t wait to get normal food and normal things for example cream that does not have skin whitener in it and bras that do not have extra breasts on them!!! I mean what is up with that!! I cant even begin to image how this experience will be, and especially coming straight from here to there…. Very exciting..
Well, but now we are going out in the cold on a conquest to try to find a shower, because if we take a shower here we will probably faint from cold then turn into ice then fall into the toilette and melt and never come back or end up in the sea somewhere even further away then China..!!!… so we will find a new solution in one of these big buildings around here that have swimming pools inside.. so first find out how to say shower in chinese..!!

aftur..

já, svona gengur það bara.. Fékk hundleið á frábæru vinnunni minni, þoldi ekki að það var farið með mig eins og kínverskann starfsmann, ( semsagt alveg nauðgað með laun og vinnutíma.. ).
En ég hef lært margt. Þannig hér er ég búin að vera vinna fyrir tvö fyrirtæki 3 mánuði hjá hvoru, eitt kínverskt og eitt frá evrópu. Hvernig getur það verið að það sé farið með mann eins og drottningu í kínverska fyrirtækinu ( þá, einkabílstjóri sem ég fékk næstun alltaf far með í og úr vinnu, fríann hádegismat, oftast skemmtilegustu störfin, og allavega betri laun en meðal kínverskur vinnumaður ) en í evrópska fyrirtækinu er farið með mann eins og hund, hryllileg laun, næstun ekkert jólafrí, langur vinnutími, enginn bílstjóri eða matur, og rétt svo tvö rauðvínsglös og snakk á littlu jólunum!!! ( eigandinn er hollenskur sem segir allt… ). Þetta gerir mig alveg ruglaða í ríminu…. En ég bíst við að ef fyrirtæki er að koma hingað frá evrópu þá ætti það að segja allt um að þeir séu að spara eins mikin pening og hægt er.. Þannig að ég er búin að komast að ég vil vinna hjá hvorugu! Ég vil að það sé komið framm við mig eins og mig, Ninna, hvorki hvít eða gul, ljóshærð eða dökkhærð (sem að virðist virka betur í evrópu en öfugt hér).
Þannig nú er ég að gera mitt í bili og kannski vefsíðu hér og þar, fá úrin mín framleidd, svo er það L.A. baby…!! Ætli það sé vinsælt að vera hvít ljóshærð þar… hahah, úfff, verð ég að vera mjó þá líka… skrítinn heimur sem við lifum í…
respect til allra hvítra sem gula sem svarta…úff, til að vera rétt, svarta sem gula sem hvíta, eða gula sem svarta sem hvíta.. gleymdi ég einhverjum..

a month like a week

It´s been a month already.. I feel like I´m in a different time zone ( which I am but I am sure it is not supposed to work like this.. or what.. ) So that means all is going good, work is great, have been really busy for the last day´s for a presentation we are having for a Korean sport shoes company. I have been getting to do different things, for example going to the leather market and finding nice leathers and colours, and then also to do some of the graphics. Really fun..
The weather is nice this time of year, more fresh, what a strange desember, I go to Starbucks and the supermarket to try to get into the merry x-mas feeling. I have to admit I am a bit late in the pajamas shopping, there are just so many shops with so many pajamas, how can I choose..
Seton´s mum has been here for a few weeks now, really nice to have some big happy smiles and colours and blonde hair around the neighbourhood. And it was Seton´s birthday the other day, and we went to a club and one of the tall dutch boy´s was dancing on the tables ( which “they” tend to do of course… ) hahhaa.. and I almost got into a fight with a spanish and we stole some pants of the street and then had some dumplings and nuddles.. ufff, somehow it does not really do the trick, not as nice as london chips and chicken with no meat….
So, but now, seton is still lost somwhere working his ass off, but that will end now in the weekend, since it is the grand opening of the biennalle. Posters and books and posters and books will be finished and people will be there showing theyr stuff and drinking loads of the famus chinese “never get no sleep again” tea. Great stuff, and you get the most f… up dreams after that if you ever get so far..
Well, now I have been sick again for few days, I feel it is time to get up and go out in the sunny day and find some pajamas shops maybe and go wild before I get sick again..haha, could my body be telling me to fock off out of here..? no, it is telling me not to eat lunch that only costs 70 cents.. Enough about my body, haha, be well I say..
